Local media reported that Kelly suffered injuries when he crashed a Dodge Challenger before being cornered by police in the Whitehaven area of Memphis. Police had reported Kelly driving a light blue Infiniti, then a gray Toyota with Arkansas plates, before he crashed the Dodge. Police in Southaven, a city south of Memphis, said he is a suspect in a motor vehicle theft at a gas station there.
A safety alert for the region has been lifted. Earlier, police warned residents to shelter in place and stay indoors as the suspect remained at large. The city halted trolley and bus services and suspended the annual Delta Fair & Music Festival. The University of Memphis locked its doors and urged its community to stay off the streets, warning of a suspect “who has been shooting randomly across the city.”
Multiple shootings were reported in the city Wednesday, and there were at least two deaths, police said, but it was not clear how many may have been connected to Kelly’s arrest. Local TV network Fox 13 reported that Memphis police confirmed Kelly was connected to a shooting Wednesday afternoon at an AutoZone auto-parts store.
In a Twitter alert before Kelly was arrested, Memphis police had asked anyone with information about the shootings or his whereabouts to call 911, adding that “we are getting reports that he is recording his actions on Facebook.” The videos have been deleted from a Facebook page appearing to be Kelly’s, and a related Instagram account appeared to have been taken down Wednesday night.
In the live-streamed Facebook video The Post viewed before it was removed, a man appears to walk into an auto-parts store, aim a gun at another man and pull the trigger. He also claims to have shot five people.
