HIGHLIGHTS

  • A vegetable vendor in Kollam was allegedly threatened by some Congress workers
  • The vendor claimed he was threatened as he could not contribute sufficient money for Bharat Jodo Yatra
  • The Congress has suspended three of its workers involved in the incident

A vegetable shop owner was threatened and his shop was vandalised by some Congress workers in Kerala's Kollam. Reason -- he could not contribute Rs 2,000 demanded by the party workers for the Congress's ongoing Bharat Jodo Yatra. After a video of the incident went viral, the Congress issued a statement, saying that it suspended three workers involved in the said incident. In a video, S Fawaz, the shop owner, said, "In the name of Bharat Jodo Yatra fund collection, some Congress workers attacked me and my workers. They asked Rs 2,000 but I could give only Rs 500. They threw away vegetables in my shop and also insulted my customers."

"The Congress workers also threatened to kill me and attacked workers in the shop," Fawaz said. Fawaz claimed that Youth Congress state general secretary H Aneesh Khan was among the five people who vandalised his shop. After the video went viral, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president K Sudhakaran said three party workers involved in the incident have been suspended with immediate effect. "They do not represent our ideology and such behaviour is inexcusable. The party is crowdfunding small donations voluntarily, unlike others who get corporate donations," K Sudhakaran said. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said the act was done by "fringe elements" and the party has taken strict action. "Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee has been doing crowdfunding for years. Their politics runs on small donations at the grassroots. But this should not have happened. These three were clearly fringe elements and exemplary action has been taken immediately by the PCC President," Jairam Ramesh said.
